Han Tol - recorder

Monday Aug 10, 2026 to Saturday Aug 15, 2026

Han Tol was a professor at the music academies of Rotterdam, Bremen, Basel, and Bloomington (USA). Masterclasses complement his extensive teaching activities. His concert life is equally diverse. With the ensembles Flanders Recorder Quartet and the Boreas Quartet Bremen, as well as with lutenist Nigel North, he has undertaken countless concert tours in Europe, America, and the Far East. The Balthasar Neumann Ensemble remembers him not only as a clown but also as a musical director. His artistry can be heard on 50 recordings released by labels including Teldec, Hyperion, Harmonia Mundi, and EMI. Professor Tol has extensively researched Venetian music around 1500 and published several articles on the subject.

Course Description

This course is aimed at music students, trained recorder players, and advanced amateurs. In the mornings, the focus is on the recorder repertoire, solo or with accompaniment, from the Renaissance and Baroque periods (with particular emphasis on the repertoire in England between 1680 and 1760). Group lessons and lectures delve into historical background and technical aspects in detail. The afternoons are dedicated to consort repertoire for recorders of various sizes, as well as chamber music for mixed ensembles.
