Alexander Sandi Kuhn – Saxophone
Stuttgart-based saxophonist and composer Alexander Sandi Kuhn studied in Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Boston, and New York. In 2013, he received the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize for his artistic work and was a recipient of a grant from the Baden-Württemberg Arts Foundation, among other accolades. He tours regularly with his own projects (Alexander Sandi Kuhn Quartet) and is a sought-after sideman in various bands (including Gee Hye Lee’s ENCOUNTERS, Volker Engelberth Quintet, Cemre Yilmaz, and Martin Meixner). Since 2012, he has taught at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts. He has shared the stage with musicians such as Sandy Patton, Fola Dada, Hubert Nuss, Martin Schrack, Charlie Antolini, Joo Kraus, Wolfgang Schmid, Jorge Rossy, Tony Lakatos, Klaus Graf, and many others. His fourth album, 'MEANDERING', released in 2022, was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award. Course Description This course is designed for all woodwind and brass players, such as trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, or flute. Participants will be met at their current musical level and provided with the technical and musical tools to take a significant step forward. Individual challenges will be identified and analyzed, and strategies for overcoming them will be developed. The course explores flexible and creative use of the instrument in various styles and aims to sharpen the understanding of harmonic and rhythmic structures. The focus of the combo work is on collaborative composition and improvisation, shared dynamics, active listening, spontaneous arranging, phrasing in ensembles with different instruments, interplay, and understanding and expanding upon genre-specific playing styles.
This course is not suitable for beginners; prior experience playing the instrument is recommended.
