Khaled Bal´awi - Improvisation und Arabische Musik

Oriental Improvisation

Khaled Bal'awi is a classically trained cellist, he studied the cello in Jordan, United States, England, China and Germany with renowned cellists, he gained the skills of Arabic music from the environment surrounding him as he was raised in a musical family, as well as theory courses to advance his knowledge. Khaled regularly performs with orchestras in the middle east, as well as chamber groups of classical and Arabic music. He performed in four continents of the world with renowned names in the music scene such as Tareq Jundi (Oud), Kinan Azmeh (Clarinet), Rishloo Lahiri (Indian percussions) and famous singers such as Andrea Bocelli, Hani shaker, Saber Rebaï and Reham Abdel Hakim. Khaled is a professor at Yarmouk University in Jordan, he teaches cello, chamber music, theory and world music.

Course description

The course will start with a theory lesson on the basic Arabic scales with concentration on the quarter (semi) tone and its use, followed by a description on how to create a new scale based on the first tetrachord of the basic scales which is an important focus in improvisations, followed by a practical group lesson on the subject. participants will have individual lessons which will explore Arabic scales (Maqam), ornamentations in Arabic music, improvisations, Arabic rhythms and sound and articulations. participants will also have group lessons where they meet to play classic Arabic pieces and improvise, the improvisations could be based on the piece played or could be based on a theme created by the participants and explored further using the new skills they have learned, accompanied by a rhythm and other players or solo. The course will also briefly explore the relations between contemporary Arabic music other folk music such as jazz and Indian music. Participants of any age and instrument are welcome, preferred string instruments, percussion, woodwinds and piano. Participants could be of any level from beginners to advanced. The course will end with a group performance of Arabic pieces and improvisations from all participants.
